Take the artwork, showcased in a series of trailers and already proving divisive. This sure-fire hit might in fact be a poisoned chalice. Gamers cry out for remakes and new instalments of beloved franchises, but for every lauded Resident Evil 2 Remake there’s a Double Dragon Neon just waiting to be hauled over the coals for too much fan service, or not enough, or for adhering too slavishly to the original’s flaws, or for making too many changes. So not only is there already a template for how a Streets Of Rage sequel can go horribly wrong, but the developers have also had to grapple with that most unforgiving of opponents: nostalgia.
The difficulty in the North American version was cranked up to an inexplicably ludicrous level, the annoying new gameplay mechanics detracted from the visceral thrill of punching scumbags in the face, and the soundtrack was a surprise dud.
